I know a trombonist who used to use a raw brass mouthpiece (not something I would recommend) and whenever he stopped playing he had a mucky green ring around his lips. Also any instrument with a raw brass thumb ring leaves me with green thumbs, and I once ate half way through a raw brass trombone at the contact point after only a couple of months. Maybe I'm just unusually acidic, some people do seem to play raw brass without any of this happening. For me, silver plate seems to work best, as it doesnt disolve when I touch it. I have a silver plated besson 982 which is showing no major wear after about 5 years as my main horn. I also like the look of the silver plate, and it is far easier to keep clean.
