I believe that the VMI 3302 is an excellent horn! I have owned one and have had an opportunity to use it in a variety of situations. I find that the horn opens up in the upper register and is a pleasure to play. It is a much much different horn than a Mirafone 186. Everyone is different however and we all have our likes and dislikes. I do agree that using the right mouthpiece makes a difference. Perhaps a smaller bore instrument would suit you better.
