I think how good a sightreader you need to be, and thusly how much practice time you devote to sightreading, depends on how good a sightreader you want to be. Some auditions put a very high premium on your sightreading skills, like service band auditions. If you play in an orchestra, you almost never have to sightread anything, sometimes even in the audition. So it really depends on what you plan to do with the tuba as to how good a sightreader you need to be to get the gig you want.

I do agree completely that sightreading is just like any other skill on the tuba. The more you practice it, the better it gets. I'm not sure I agree that being a good sightreader makes you a better musician but that's just my opinion. I suggest you just use some common sense. If you feel your sightreading skills hold you back, you should consider practicing them to improve them.

My opinion for what its worth...
