I agree with all the other posters, even as an ameture player I only had two gigs last year where we rehearsed the music more than one day before the performance. Even in college playing orchestra, brass ensemble, and orchestra my site reading didn't improve until I started something totally different like handbells (the most frustrating thing I've ever played) or singing. Both stretched me more with rhythymically and made me a much better tuba player. Turns out our handbell group reads level 5 stuff all the time but the brass gang ends up with level four stuff most of the time (you've got to play where you can).

Also, get the Jacob's CD and do some of the things he recommends like playing parts that were never written for tuba.
