Why not bid on a really UGLY Conn model 14K (regular size - great sound and intonation) on eBay that is completely intact and playable? You can always (temporarily) paint it your school colors (or something) to "make light" of the "UGLY".
You can probably get a really ugly but playable Conn 14K (' might have to buy neck/bits, and replace corks/felts) for the price of a couple of tanks of Premium Gasoline in Chicago/Milwaukee. ;^)
Seriously, consider this strategy. Surely, your college or university will supply you with an instrument to use at school, anyway.
