"Independent study" doesn't necessarily have to be defined as "research". Many universities pooh-pooh the acquisition of actual hands-on physical skills. If yours does NOT, consider paying a good brass repair person to teach you some things. Maybe you could barter with him...cut his grass/clean his gutters/ watch his kids/etc. Acquiring skills (like performance, for instance) requires INDEPENDENT STUDY, just as any research project would. At least consider this suggestion briefly, even if it doesn't seem to be what you were looking for. Remember, instruction like this is absolutely worth paying for...After all, you "pay" tuition to listen to a psychologist teach you the gooble-de-goop that he lays on you in Psych I. ;-)

The repair person may not be able to accomodate you until later this fall, so think about leaf-raking. ;-)
