Klaus, I think the Saxons came from parts a little south of your current home, but the Angles came right from your neighborhood. Much of the reason English is so mixed up is because of various invasions by what I presume are your ancestors. You communicate more effectively than you realize, and often in ways that require thought on the part of the reader.

On the other hand, Joe can be downright obscure, which also requires thought on the part of the reader (of sometimes a different sort). His statement concerning mortar boards and gowns I think means that the appearance of dignity normally required of highly educated academics he finds a little too restricting. Rather than that appearance of dignity, I think he prefers being plain spoken. At least most of the time.

That we can be obscure and challenge each other to think is perhaps the greatest tribute to what Sean does for us.
