Postings disappearing on the main board may in some case be found in the archives. I have at least in one case noticed that a thread that had run for a period, was moved to the archives even if the latest follow-ups were quite new.
My guess is that Sean is keeping the download time down by from time to time to remove the bottom of the BBS to the archives according to the date, and hence board placement, of the first posting of threads.
In a few cases impractical, but at any rate carried by logic.
