I just returned from a trip spent trying 3/4 horns. I came to the conclusion that I didn't want one. The sound is just too small for me. That being said, the class of the field was the Mirafone. The Weril shouldn't be disparaged, however. It played evenly throughout its range and is hard to argue with for the money. I corresponded extensively with Joe in Memphis about the Weril and I think he described it perfectly. If I could be happy with that smaller sound, I'd be buying one.

The Mirafone had a sound closer to its larger cousins, but still too small for me. The model I played is a piston model called the 1271. By the way, I don't think the Conn 5J is a true 3/4. It is however, a very nice horn. I'd have a hard time choosing between that and the Mirafone. It's also about the prettiest horn I've ever seen in a matte silver with bright accents.
