"How does the 163 compare to the B&S?" I believe you could say all tubas today compare to a Cerveny. Before Vaclav came along, we just had skinny little bombardons to play. So I could rightly say they [163 vs. B&S PT-6] are identical. A car is a car. Right?
To split hairs, I believe the Alexander 163 and Meinl Weston 2155 (The piston horn I believe most similar in size and purpose to the Alex 163) have a leaner (more athletic) sound and response than the B&S PT-6. If you prefer power lifting to soccer, then there's nothing wrong with a good PT-6. Why not stop by and see which horn picks you.
