Basically, I think that a person is better off using a real mouthpiece designed for the instrument whenever possible. The problem is that this requires a lot of practice and a strong concept of how both instruments should sound.

I've tried using Shilke bass trombone mouthpieces (like a 58) on a euph before, and had the problem that the shank was too big, so the whole thing was flat, causing me to screw around even further with my face to try and play the thing in tune.

Whatever you try, make sure it fits into your mouthpiece receiver the way it is supposed to, and doesn't wobble.

I would recommend using a real euph mouthpiece - I think the Shilke 51C is a standard model - I could be wrong about that.

If you would rather not use such a small rim, then I would suggest trying out a Doug Elliott setup to see if you can get the balance between sound and feel that you require.
