Having been a performance major, and then many years later an engineering major, I noticed this: the more difficult it is to make a living with whatever degree you are pursuing, the easier it is to get scholarship money to pursue that degree. I had scholarships out the wazoo for the music degree, but later it took three years of a perfect 4.0 average in engineering school before I got a scholarship in my senior year.
However, the money I made in my first three years as a junior engineer was more than I made in the previous ten years as a musician.
So there is some hopefully useful information for you.
