I recently bought an older Cerveny 601 CC for the same purpose, and I really like the horn. Handling the intonation is a bit of a chore, but manageable. The sound is huge and rounded, with both good bottom and good treble. From some posts I've read, though, the older horns are better than the new ones.

If your son is using a BBb Yamammaha at school, you need to make sure that this is not a CC tuba, because a new player doesn't need the confusion of switching back and forth between fingering systems while he's first learning. From looking at the stretch of the upper and lower bows, it looks like a BBb to me, but I'm no expert. Call Taylor's and ask.
