I absolutely dig the float thing!! Mardi Gras is big in the deep south where I reside. I had the chance to do a street band gig on the back of a float one year in a long evening parade whilst my band had to march the whole thing. To answer your qustion about glissandos, Mr. Chisham hits the nail on the head. Effect... There are a few glisses in a piece I am currently working on, E. Raum's "Will there be a Time?" The directions are noted for some of them in the solo, but it is easier said than done for a few of them. Listen to Winton Marsalis's Carnival album. He does the definitive glissando on that album, imho. Best wishes.
