I'm selling a Cerveny 601 CC tuba that I had customized for my uses and I can confirm that it does take a substantial amount of air. One of the reasons I like my Nirschl 6/4, the horn that replaced my Cerveny, is that it produces that same BAT sound but more efficiently. I wouldn't be inclined to recommend this horn to a beginner at all. It is definitely a good horn but, in my mind, more of a specialty horn than an all purpose one.
My opinion for what it's worth...
