I find that whenever I find myself lacking motivation or just frustrated by seeming lack of improvement, sitting down by a loud stereo playing along with the CSO or NYPhil seems to do the trick to get me back on track. Take an hour and play some Bruckner and Meistersinger with the best, imagine yourself as part of the ensemble, and (if you're like me) you'll be a little more willing to tackle those etudes. Even if it fail at that, at least you've put in both an hour of playing and an hour of listening :-)
