I just bought a Rudolf Meinl CCC (the piston horn) yesterday from the Brasswind and am curious what mouthpieces people have found to work well with it. I have been using a Conn Helleburg for just about as long as I've been playing and it seemed to work well with that. Any other suggestions?
Also, while I was down there, another question popped into my head. Why do all German-ish rotary valve tubas (with the exception of the piggies and 'fone 191's, i think) have "long throw" bells (or ones that extend significantly above the rest of the tuba)? Why don't piston models have bells like these? What is the effect of either design?
