Joe, I think we just kinda packed it in and whimpered back to the stands. I remember all the cries of embarrassment in the stands afterward. What a nightmare! I was still worse than the time the next year year when our miscommunicating drum majors decided to act on their own by marching only half the band off the field to play "Hey, Look Me Over" for the drill team. We looked like a bunch of chumps.

My most fond (funny) band memory though, happened in Jr. High. We were practicing our contest piece for the one millionth time and could never seem to follow Mrs. Thompson during a retard. She finally blew her top, threw the baton and screamed at us for not retarding and following her direction. Just then, during the hushed silence, the brown-nosing, geeky boy F-Horn player raised his hand slowly and proclaimed: "Mrs. Thompson, I retarded". I never laughed so hard in my life!
