Tuning slides v. trombone slides

Hey, a little thing has been nipping at my brain.

Trombone slides are actually plated, whereas tuning slides are simply buffed up and greased. I can see how this would be necessary on most tuning slides, but for that ever friendly first valve, why not plate it and then put a spring/bar thing to keep it from slidin out. You could then get it sliding good with nice trombone slide cream.

Or is this done on some horns already?

I'm not sure if I would even like the results, Im just wondering if anyone has tried it and if it works, or why no one has.

Thanks!

Doug "slick" G
