I decided to try ultrapure lamp oil, because I have been using Al Cass for years and heard the lamp oil was just as good. Have to say, it works fine for me. Only had one problem last winter: The bottle sat out in the car in subfreezing weather and when I took it inside it was full of ice crystals. No apparent difference when it thawed out. Since it is so cheap, I go on the theory that more can't hurt. I play a Mirafone 183 with 4 rotaries and a Conn 26J sousaphone. I pour about a tablespoonful down the leadpipe of the Mirafone about every time I play it. Swish it around, gargle a little, and drain it on a towel:) On the 26K, I bathe the pistons liberally. On both horns, I have anhydrous lanolin on the slides, which does get stiff. A few drops of the oil on the slides loosen them up quite nicely.
YMMV
