I've heard great sounds from Mr. Deck, but with all due respect - my best guess is that his *blowing through a before-bent pipe was about as good a test as someone sighting down a guitar neck (which, of course, tells the potential player of the guitar nothing at all) to "see" if it will play well.

*Well, it may have given Mr. Deck some "clue" (a bit better than sighting down a guitar neck, possibly), but the taper and resistance of the pipe was certainly changed after it was bent, just as the tapers of an instruments' large bows are, once bent.
