The news I heard was that Sony was using a copy protection scheme involving a track of bogus data that a computer would repeatedly try to read. In some cases, this would require rebooting, or even a complicated restart process to bypass the optical drive completely. Even some normal CD players would have problems reading such a disc.
HOWEVER,
After thinking about it, I think that I remember this was an issue in the UK and Germany, but not here in the US. I'll have to look around some more to be sure.
