The problem hardly is the "hardness" of the material at the contact point.

More likely is, that the design of the hand-rest "fake" tubing has been placed to accommodate the large male hands, note the smaller copies used by the rest of the humanity.

I can relate to Heather's problem, as I have had a similar experience on my Besson 981, which is an Eb tuba, and which utilises the inner body top bow as a quite thick and low-set hand rest. My right hand goes on strike, if I put my right thumb below that hand rest.

The solution was simplistic: I took one of the cleaning rags for my trombone slides and made an 8-loop around the hand rest and one of its stays towards the bell. Provided me a secure and flexible thumb-rest.

I am sure Heather could do the same around the T-joint of the fake tubing and the vertical branch running along the bell. Might take an adjustment or two before the knot is pulled too tightly.
