One large component of the sound that we hear versus what others hear is caused by the direct coupling of the horn to our face, and the resulting vibration of our skulls and the air in our sinuses and ear canals. I have to listen for the sound that bounces back to me in a live hall to get any notion of what is getting out there.

The problem with listening to other players on a horn is that it tells me nothing about how well that horn covers my faults. Now, getting a qualified listener to hear me play the instruments--that's always worth doing.
