A huge subject! Some great names and bands: Bob Escudero and June Cole-(Fletcher Henderson Orch.), Pete Briggs, (Louis Armstrong); Richard Fullbright, (Ross-DeLuxe Syncopators); Min Leibrook, (Bix Beiderbecke and the Wolverines); Harry Barth, (Ted Lewis Band); Harry Edwards, (Savoy Bearcats); "Chink" Martin, (New Orleans Rhtyhm Kings); Country Washburn, (Ted Weems). Some Coon-Sanders recordings have great tuba solos on them. Many of these folks performed on sousaphone much more than tuba. There are also two great recordings on the Red Hot Bands website that may feature John "Chief" Kuhn:

Listen to almost any jazz/dance/commercial recordings from about 1926-1931 and you'll probably hear tuba/sousaphone as the bass.
