I was studying at the RSAMD in Glasgow at the time ( March 2000 ) and heard the
Birtwistle "Cry of Anubis ". It is about 12 mins long and probably is best described
as "atmospheric " . It is taken from fragments of Birtwistle's opera - The Second
Mrs Kong - which features lots of tuba . This performance was by an impressive
CHRIS McSHANE and the BBC Scottish Symphony, of which he is principal tuba ( also
formerly RPO tubist ). I would say this was a better alround performance than the
LPO/ Slade version which I also heard a few years earlier (1995 ).
