I bought the cheapest sousa gig bag from the Brasswind catalog last fall and used it with a plastic sousaphone for an airline trip from Connecticut to Florida, with a change in Atlanta. There was no extra baggage charge, the straps made it easy to carry, and the instrument made it down and back in one piece, although one brace did come loose on the return trip. It is very well-padded and well-constructed. I believe that it offers much better protection than the old un-padded "fiber" cases and will probably last longer, too. But you do have to spend a few minutes packing the instrument into the bag carefully.
