Could it be that those nickel horns and cornets were, in fact, nickel silver, which is a brass with about 15% nickel to give it the white color? Nickel silver is normally lacquered to stay shiny. The (now) unlacquered nickel silver on the slides and trim of my Alex F tuba is turning a dull grey, but even St. Petersburg nickel-plated tubas (unlacquered, but with hardly the highest-quality plating) stay shiny in many places.
