I think this is what Gene Pokorny is possibly referring to on his orchestral excerpts cd. He says something to the effect of spending your life climbing a ladder, only to find that when you reach the top, your ladder is leaning against the wrong wall. I believe it's a paraphrase from the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
I actually went through the same thing when I was finishing my Bachelor's degree. In my case, it was the other way around. I had planned on becoming a band director because everyone had always told me that no one makes it as a professional player. After 4.5 years of college, I realised that I didn't want to be a band director, that it was the playing that I wanted after all.
Hopefully I'm still on the right ladder...
