I was more acknowledging that some folks branch out from community bands. For example, I branched out and have played in orchestras, brass quintets, and tuba quartets. An F tuba provided me more options, so I got one. But by the time I reached that point, I knew what I wanted, and knew how to look for it (which was my main point). I could have played all that using BBb tubas (and did for a while), but I didn't want to.

Many players are content to stay in a community band forever, and their BBb tubas always satify their desires. The advantage to being an amateur is that we can follow our desires, and don't have to justify our instrument choices based on needs.
