I have several old Martin tubas and several detachable recording bells to go with them. One of the bells was heavily buffed and re-lacquered,(the engraving is almost invisible). Now I know that the depth of the engraving was probably miniscule, yet this bell simply does not respond like the others. I would describe it as "dead" or lacking resonance. Of course, there may have been some variation in the original bell which has nothing to do with its'present "thinness", but it's the only dud out of six bells. I can't imagine the heat produced from aggressive buffing could be strong enough to somehow change the temper of the brass, but I'll leave that to the engineers on the site. I'm not using this as a "thick vs. thin" argument, but I wonder if others have experienced a change in playing characteristics in horns that have been heavily buffed.
