I started playing in a Dixieland group about 10 years ago with my only horn at the time, a BBb Olds upright tuba. I was always losing the sound (and all of my energy) into the upper atmosphere! I had the chance to pick up a beat-up high school cast-off, a BBb Olds sousaphone for $200 + $50 to get it playing. This horn made a world of difference and I used it for a few years, until I had the chance to buy a 1921 BBb Conn 4 valve helicon! The Conn was taken care of beautifully by its previous owners and it plays easily and very well in tune in all key combinations. This horn projects well in all situations and brings an air of authenticity to the Dixieland group. Lately I have collected a couple of other horns and have used them in the group, but the helicon is still the BEST! It plays so well, I use it in other groups, when I can get away with it. (Serious concert band directors won't go for it!)
