More than likely, you are hearing Oscar's work. It's really a shame that recording technology wasn't as good back then. The recordings I heard of those days didn't capture what Oscar could really sound like. He had an amazing sound. But Oscar's musicality is unmistakable. I never once heard a single recording of him where I felt like he overbalanced the orchestra. He always had this way of playing just the right volume and everything came out very tasteful and present. He really was a tremendous ensemble player.
