I went back to play in my college's alumni band a couple of weeks ago. The college had just bought new Jupiter sousaphones to replace the ancient King sousaphones that they had been using. I tried one out and can honestly say the the old, beat up Kings played much better. They looked good, but they sounded thin or blatty, nothing in between. So, I don't think that it's just the "fiber-brass" versions that have problems. I like the Jupiter 582 tuba, but the sousaphones need work.
