I haven't ever done a conversion, but I recently read an old interview with Bob Rusk from a TUBA journal. His comments were interesting on what he did. He stated that he liked to start with a horn that was top action and has the tuning slide before the valve cluster, and convert to front action. On this type of tuba, once you remove the tuning slide and the short tube that is after the valve cluster, and added the new valve cluster and tuning slide, you've just about cut enough out of the horn to make it a CC.

If you're starting with a front action, the procedure is much more difficult, but the goal is to remove cylindrical sections first.
