Klaus, One reason for my question is that a few years ago I had a student named Weinstein (pronounced Wine-steen). He was Jewish also.
Now in German of course it would be pronounced "vine-stine" (My HS german class taught me the "ie vs. ei" pronunciation rule). I was curious if there was a Jewish inflection that would make Bernstein "Bern-steen". Or perhaps for obvious reasons they woudl want to distance themselves from the german pronunciation. Or perhaps it is a Yiddish thing? I don't know. I am just wondering out loud.
