A low tech solution is to line the walls with book-cases, and stuff them full of books of all sizes, the more varied the better. If you've ever seen those large wooden diffuser panels (there were some for sale on E*** a while ago) they basically look like books anyway. The idea here is (as Rick mentioned below) to create as many angles as possible, so the sound is reflected in every direction. The weight/thickness of the books also damps the sound quite well.

It's cheap, functional (have to put the books somewhere!), and works for me, but it doesn't stop sound leaking through the ceiling.
