Interesting, `cause the way you describe it is the way I used to play it in high school. Now I'm working on a 32k and it doesn't matter if I "send `em in" from the right, front, left, or otherwise. Furthermore, the "s" shaped pipe between the valves and the neck (I guess the leadpipe) seems to come straight out of the valves. In other words, to my knowledge, there hasn't been any damages or bad repaires. Of coarse, I'm not a repairman. The only way to get the mouthpiece to my lipes is to curl the instrument forward from underneath, bringing the entire leadpipe into a higher position. I don't know what I should do short of an operation ( not me, the sous!) or a large pillow. Is it possable that the 32k's weren't made so well?
