MW claims to have repaired some of the pitch problems on the brand-brand new ones.
Whether or not this is true may remain to be seen, as many will shy away from purchasing (ordering on approval, etc.) because of its reputation.

To me, pitch (intonation, whatever) is the language of music. I need an instrument that can speak the language. I always seem to be able - after living with an instrument for a few minutes - to figure out how to get a pretty sound out of it.
summary: Pitch consistency is much more important (at least to moi) than right-off-the-bat "beauty of tone". It's far easier to figure out how to get a beautiful sound out of an instrument than how to pull an F+1/2# down to a properly-tempered F#.
