Sadly, this is good advice. For bop and post-bop jazz, don't expect to find many tuba players who play like Michael Brecker. As far as the Aebersold stuff goes, I would recommend the tune-oriented volumes over the theory-oriented ones. It's tough to find people to play with when you're a "non-standard" instrument, and I owe a helluva lot to the Aebersold books for this reason. Do make a concerted effort to play with real people though.
