Measurements of woodwind quintets indicate that they sound out of tune it there are noticable errors of more than 5 cents flat or sharp present at any time. For example, a good compensating three valve tuba or euph is hardly out of tune by more than 2 cents.
A three valve instrument which is in tune on its open tones and in tune using the first, second or third valves alone is very much out of tune on various valve combinations. 23 is about 15 cents sharp, 13 is about 32 cents sharp and 123 is 53 cents sharp. Simple 5 valve tubas also suffer the same disability especially when the 4 and 5th valves are introduced.
