There do not seem to be very many Holton sousaphones out there, and there were real playability issues with the later models. I have two in my shop to refurbish, one lacquered and one silver, and both of them are in amazingly good condition to be 1953-vintage horns. The older ones were definitely better-braced, and are similar in wrap and bore to a 14K Conn. One of them even has the original Holton Collegiate case, and both will make nice restorations.
The horn you saw may have been older than you think.
