Are we splitting hairs? Most British tuba players before Fletcher used Barlow F's, and most afterwards used Besson EEb's. I'd be happy to have that assertion corrected by someone who lives there. And nobody can have any complaint about Fletcher's orchestral performances using Eb's, while before that time Eb's were considered band instruments not worthy of orchestral use.

But you are right; I'm not British. If someone from England came on this thread and said, no, it was actually John Elliott who first used the Eb at Sadler's Wells (Bevan included a picture of same in his first edition, from 1976), who in so doing persuaded Fletcher and several others to give it a try in their orchestras, then I'd be persuaded. But I don't think that is the case.
