No matter what you do, you owe to yourself to do it the best you can. The only turds in the military I thought needed polishing were the ones that I left on stage, the parade field, or anywhere else I may have been standing or sitting while playing. I am the same way now. Whether conducting or playing, I want to be the best I possibly can be. Every second is worth it, whether I am polishing the D major Scale with my orchestra, playing "Saints" with the Dixie band, "Bankelsangerleider" with the quintet, or conducting the National Anthem with the Brass Band. I can't accept a life that allows any less. What is the point of doing something if it can't be done well.
