This style comes over in his solo playing also (the Penderecki comes to mind...). I think Fletcher was not a man who enjoyed severely aggressive blowing in his playing. Of course he was capable (as we occasionally hear in recordings), but it wasn't something he was most comfortable with. That is part of the reason he moved over to the Big Holtons for a lot of the repertoire - because he wasn't into blowing his guts out : )
