This tuba recording talk reminds me of when I was going though my Mirafone phase and had a 188 and 185 at the same time. While the term" the tape doesn't lie" is true, the tape often favors a particular tonality above another. I took the opportunity to play both horns to tape and found the smaller 185 sounded bigger on tape than the 188 did. So, what these guys sounded like in person may or may not have much bearing on how they were captured on tape, and add to that the engineers' mic placements and other recording technique differences.
