The placement of the leadpipe places the mouthpiece so that the player sits the horn on the lap or hold in front. The bell points over the left shoulder and behind the player. This was done because the band was in front of soldiers in parade formation. The sound went over the left shoulder and to the rear so that the music was heard more clearly.

The civil war stories are told that bands also played with the intended audience was behind the band, such as times that Union and Confederate bands played to wach other from across the lines. They sat with the lines behind them and played to each other.

I am sure there are better authorities that can shed more light.
