I'm not an expert, but the horns I've seen from that era pointed over the left shoulder. I believe that the photo is correct and played with right hand. Will concede that I may be wrong, but there it is.
At present, I am looking for a book that my grandparents had on civil war history that covered bands. Loaded with photos. If I can find it, I will give list the title and references.
