Yes, they could have stockings on the end somewhat like trombone handslides (only fit a little tighter). Some older horns have a similar feature - sometimes referred to as grease cups.
Better yet, why are the third slides on many instruments so long anyway? On most top action horns you couldn't possibly tune the third slide all the way out without hitting your leg or the chair. Of course you have far bigger issues if you need to pull the slide that far out.
