I believe they plug the bell and the mouthpipe and the top and bottom of the valve casings. Usually you can see a definite line in the silver somewhere in the bell and bottom bow and sometimes a line in the valve casing or a little leakage in the valve area. I tend to agree with you guys estimates. And I have seen them roll a penny out super thin with those big roller presses. It would still take a few pennies to do the job so I figure at least a handfull of old mercury heads would do. Maybe silver plating would be cheaper if those damn horn players would stop soldering those old Mercury heads to their spatulas!
